Faux Paw´s letter to school children on Internet Safety I'm Faux Paw, the Techno Cat. My name is pronounced "foe-paw." In French the word faux pas means false step or mistake, but I'm named Faux Paw because I have an extra toe on each of my front paws. Techno is short for technology. I am an orange tabby cat who came from the animal shelter to become Utah's Top Cat. I live at the State Capitol building. I like doing things other cats do. I enjoy napping on a sunny window sill, pouncing on a toy and eating tasty meals. Until now it has been unusual to find a cat in the office building I call home. My territory is the governor's office, and here, I'm an important part of the office team. I like all of the computers in the office. That's why I'm called the Techno Cat. Sometimes I sit on the laps of my friends at the office when they work on the computer. I have my own website and e-mail address. Have you ever written to a cat? You might guess typing doesn't work well for me with my four paws. So the folks at the office lend me a hand when it comes to answering my e-mail. I love to surf the web using the mouse, my favorite part of the computer. But I'm always careful because the Internet is like a big city. When you travel to a big city, you need to be careful where you go and what you do. It's the same when you use the Internet. If I come to a website or chat room that makes me feel uncomfortable, I leave it as fast as if an angry dog were chasing me. Tell an adult when something on the Internet makes you feel uncomfortable. I have been to visit schools with Governor Leavitt and the first lady. The boys and girls are always friendly to me. I see computers in the school rooms, and I know students love the Internet. But you need to remember to be very careful When you use it. There are three rules listed below that will keep you safe. 1. Never give your name, address or phone number to anyone online. 2. Never agree to meet anyone you've connected with online. 3. If you feel uncomfortable about something you find on the Internet, tell a parent or teacher right away. Tell your parents about the 24-hour tipline at 1-800-843-5678 they can call to report the problem. This will connect them with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
